Crowds walking between illuminated shops on Hongdae Red Road in the evening

Landing at Incheon with a suitcase? Start with Holiday Inn Express Seoul Hongdae. It has the easiest station arrival of these four. Traveling with two friends? L7 HONGDAE and Mercure Ambassador Seoul Hongdae give you the clearest three-person room choices. If the hotel’s design is part of the fun, RYSE, Autograph Collection is the one worth spending more time on.

There is no single best hotel in Hongdae. The right answer changes with your arrival route, who is sharing the room, and how close you want to be to the neighborhood’s late-night energy. All four hotels are central, which is convenient during the day and less predictable when you are trying to sleep.

Quick answer
Pick Holiday Inn Express for the simplest AREX arrival and included breakfast. Choose Mercure for the best balance of location, room choice, and laundry facilities. Put L7 first when three people need one room with a clear bed layout. Choose RYSE when you want more personality from the hotel and do not mind checking its branded room categories carefully. If quiet sleep matters more than being in central Hongdae, look toward a side street or the Yeonnam-dong side of the station instead.

Is this an airport-convenience night or a Hongdae stay?

For a one-night airport-convenience stay, arrival simplicity may dominate. For a multi-night Hongdae stay, repeat the decision with sleep, room fit, and the routes used after the first day.

When central Hongdae is the wrong sleep decision

These four hotels keep you close to Hongdae, but none is a verified quiet-block hotel. If quiet sleep is non-negotiable, widen the search to a side street or the Yeonnam-dong side of Hongik University Station. The walk may be longer, but that can be a better trade than worrying about noise every night.

Yeonnam-dong near Hongdae; this scene does not represent a guaranteed quiet hotel block.

Within this shortlist, Holiday Inn Express is the first place to check when nightlife is secondary. Its main advantage is the station and AK Plaza location rather than immediate access to the busiest pedestrian streets. This does not guarantee a quiet room.

For any of the four, ask for a room away from the main road, loading areas, lifts, rooftop venues, and connecting doors. A high floor may help, but treat it as a request. Recent reviews are most useful when they mention your exact room category and the same night of the week as your stay, especially Friday or Saturday.

Four Hongdae hotels, four different trips

Holiday Inn Express Seoul Hongdae: easiest after the airport

After a long flight, the best hotel may simply be the one that removes the most decisions. IHG places Holiday Inn Express in Aekyung Tower, the same building as AK Plaza, and about one minute from Hongik University Station Exit 5. The Airport Railroad runs directly between Hongik University Station and Incheon Airport.

The one-minute figure starts at the exit, not at the train door. Hongik University Station is large, so you still need to allow time for the AREX platform, elevators, passageways, and the trip up to the hotel lobby. Even with that caveat, this is the clearest arrival route of the four.

The rooms run from 18㎡ to 32㎡. Depending on the category, you may find a king, queen, two singles, three singles, one queen plus one single, or two queen beds. Enter the full party before browsing so Trip.com does not show a room that cannot take everyone.

Breakfast is another reason to choose this hotel. Express Start breakfast is included for staying guests and is currently served from 06:30 to 09:30. Check-in begins at 15:00, checkout is at 12:00, and there is a self-service laundry room. It is a practical combination for travelers who want an early start without searching for breakfast first.

If the flight lands late, ask Holiday Inn Express for the arrival and luggage instructions that apply to the selected booking. The published station access does not by itself confirm an unannounced late arrival or a particular storage window.

Mercure Ambassador Seoul Hongdae: the easy all-rounder

Mercure is the easiest all-round starting point when your needs are mixed. It is close to the station, close to the main Hongdae streets, and has enough room layouts to work for couples, friends, and some groups of three.

Accor lists the hotel at 144 Yanghwa-ro and places Hongik University Station about 100 metres, or one minute, away. Elsewhere on the same page it points to Exit 9 and describes the AREX connection as roughly a five-minute walk. Both can be true: the nearest station entrance and the airport-train platform are not the same place.

The room list is more helpful than a generic “double or twin” label. Standard King rooms are 19–20㎡ for two. Superior King and Twin rooms are 21–22㎡ for two. Three friends can look for the 21–22㎡ Superior room with three single beds. A larger 29㎡ Superior room with one queen and one single bed is another three-person option.

Accor publishes a laundromat and 15:00/12:00 check-in and checkout. If luggage storage matters, ask for the current window, size limits, and whether several large suitcases can be accepted; this draft does not use an OTA storage label as a recommendation reason.

The main decision is room versus route. Mercure offers better room flexibility than Holiday Inn Express, while Holiday Inn Express has the simpler published airport arrival. Pick the problem you care about more.

L7 HONGDAE: best when three people share

Three-person hotel rooms can be frustratingly vague. A photo shows two beds, the room title says “twin,” and the booking screen still refuses the third adult. L7 is easier to understand because LOTTE publishes the layouts.

The 24.8㎡ Superior Family Twin sleeps three with one double and one single bed. There is also a separate triple category for three people. A couple traveling with another adult may prefer the family twin, while three friends will probably want the three separate beds.

Standard double and twin rooms are also 24.8㎡ for two. Think about the luggage as well as the beds: three people may fit on paper but feel crowded once three suitcases are open.

Check-in is at 15:00 and checkout is at 11:00. The official Family Twin page says the bathroom may have a bathtub or shower booth depending on room type. Confirm the exact room and rate plan; this draft does not use unverified pool, breakfast, or luggage benefits to recommend L7.

For the walk, Trip.com places Hongik University Station about 480 metres away. A recent traveler review describes leaving Exit 1, turning left, and walking a few minutes. That is a useful street-level clue, but it does not tell you which elevator to take from the AREX platform.

RYSE, Autograph Collection: worth it for the hotel itself

RYSE is the one to choose because you like RYSE, not because it wins a simple transport comparison. The hotel leans into design, dining, and its public spaces. If you only need the easiest room after the airport, Holiday Inn Express is the more obvious answer.

Marriott lists RYSE at 130 Yanghwa-ro, near Hongik University Station. A current venue guide describes a 300-metre straight walk from Exit 9. That gets you from the exit to the hotel, but not from the AREX platform to the exit, so check the station elevators separately when traveling with heavy luggage.

The room names are part of the brand: Creator King, Creator Double/Double, Editor King, and Editor Double/Double. Double/Double tells you about the beds, not how many adults and children a particular rate accepts. Enter every traveler before choosing the room.

Check-in is at 15:00 and checkout is at 12:00. Marriott lists a 24-hour front desk and elevators, but the hotel does not provide its own shuttle. From Incheon Airport, compare AREX plus the walk, the current airport bus and its stop, and a taxi for your actual arrival time.

If RYSE remains the choice, match the creative room name to the actual beds and accepted party on the final rate plan. Request a suitable room direction if sleep is a priority; do not treat the hotel’s central location as a quiet-room guarantee.

Getting from Hongik University Station to your hotel

Hongik University Station is the detail that catches first-time visitors. Line 2, the Gyeongui–Jungang Line, and AREX meet here, but their platforms are spread across a large station. A hotel can be one minute from an exit and still require a longer walk from your train.

Street-level entrance to Hongik University Station Exit 6 in Seoul

Holiday Inn Express has the easiest route to understand: Exit 5 and the AK Plaza building. Mercure has a published station distance and an Exit 9 reference. RYSE has a 300-metre route from Exit 9. L7 has a street-level clue from Exit 1 and a station distance of about 480 metres.

Before you book, open Naver Map and start the route at Hongik University Station. Use the line you will actually arrive on, then look for the platform elevator, the best exit, road crossings, the building entrance, and the hotel lobby floor. Run the route in reverse for departure day too. The easiest way into the station is not always the easiest way back to the AREX platform.

If anyone in your group struggles with stairs or long station walks, ask the hotel for a step-free route. None of the available directions proves the complete elevator journey from platform to lobby for every hotel.

Pick the room before you pick the hotel

Start with the people sharing the room.

  • A couple sharing one bed can find king, queen, or double rooms at all four hotels. Compare floor space and breakfast instead of assuming the more expensive brand has a larger room.
  • Two friends needing separate beds can check Mercure’s Superior Twin, L7’s standard twin, or Holiday Inn Express twin categories. RYSE’s double/double rooms may be more space and cost than two people need.
  • Three friends should start with Mercure’s three-single Superior room or L7’s triple. Holiday Inn Express also lists a three-single arrangement, but it must appear for your dates.
  • A couple plus one adult or older child can look at the queen-plus-single room at Mercure or the double-plus-single Family Twin at L7.
  • Four travelers may see double/double or two-queen rooms at RYSE and Holiday Inn Express. Do not assume the bed count means four adults are allowed. Let the final booking screen accept the full party, or book two rooms.

Room size matters once the suitcases come out. Use the published floor area as a starting point, then inspect the current photos and decide where everyone’s luggage will go.

What to do with your bags

The first-party sources used for this comparison do not establish one common luggage-storage rule for all four hotels. Storage therefore remains a final booking check, not a reason to rank the shortlist.

If the flight arrives before check-in or leaves after checkout, ask the selected hotel four direct questions: Can bags be left before check-in? How late can they stay after checkout? Are several large suitcases or a stroller accepted? What must a guest do when arriving after the normal check-in window?

A published station distance or a 24-hour desk does not promise early room access, unlimited storage, or an unannounced arrival. Keep the hotel only when the direct answer works with the flight and luggage plan.

Complete one final room and booking check

Open the hotel pages with your real dates and every traveler entered. Check the exact room name, beds, guest count, floor area, breakfast, cancellation deadline, payment terms, deposit, taxes, and final total. Then look at the current room and bathroom photos.

Do one last transport check before paying. Find the station exit and elevators, trace the road crossings and building entrance, and confirm the hotel’s luggage and late-arrival arrangements. If sleep matters, add the room-direction request while the reservation is still fresh.

The cheapest first price is not always the cheapest trip. Holiday Inn Express may save you an awkward arrival and a separate breakfast. A three-person room at Mercure or L7 may remove the need for a second room. RYSE is worth the extra cost only if your group will enjoy the hotel as more than a place to sleep.

If the room name, beds, occupancy, breakfast, or cancellation terms change between the list page and checkout, stop and ask the hotel before paying. If the answer is still unclear, choose another room or another hotel.
