Choose Dongdaemun if shopping, Dongdaemun Design Plaza, traditional markets, and the eastern side of central Seoul appear repeatedly in your itinerary.

The neighborhood name is only the first filter. In Dongdaemun especially, a hotel near Dongdaemun Station is not the same transport choice as one near Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station. In Hongdae, a property described as “Hongdae” may be near Hongik University Station, Yeonnam, Hapjeong, or another part of Mapo. Check the hotel entrance and the station you will actually use before booking.

This is not a contest between an “old” neighborhood and a “young” one. It is a choice between two different sets of journeys. Count the airport arrival once, the morning departure once per day, and the return to the hotel every night.

First, decide what “Dongdaemun” means on the hotel listing

Dongdaemun is the less precise label of the two. Visit Seoul describes Dongdaemun Market as a broad commercial district around Dongdaemun Gate, with traditional markets and shopping centers spread across the area. Booking sites may also use Dongdaemun for hotels closer to DDP, Euljiro, or other nearby station districts.

Two station names matter immediately:

Those stations are connected to different lines, exits, and blocks. A hotel can honestly use “Dongdaemun” in its name while being much more convenient for one station than the other. Save the hotel’s Korean name and address, then locate the entrance in Naver Map or Kakao Map.

Hongdae also covers more than one street, but Hongik University Station gives the comparison a clearer transport anchor. A Hongdae hotel should still be checked for its actual walk to the line you plan to use; an exit that looks close on a booking map may not be the most useful entrance for every platform.

Hongdae has the clearer airport-rail advantage

For a first arrival with luggage, Hongdae has the easier default case. Hongik University Station is on the Airport Railroad as well as Seoul’s urban rail network. That does not make every Hongdae hotel effortless, but it gives you a direct rail station to investigate before considering a transfer elsewhere. Dongdaemun does not have one equivalent Airport Railroad station. The best airport route depends on which Dongdaemun station and hotel entrance you choose. A rail journey may involve a transfer, while an airport limousine bus or taxi may work better for a particular property. Incheon International Airport lists Airport Railroad, airport limousine buses, and taxis among the airport options; compare them for the exact hotel rather than for “Dongdaemun” as a whole.

Do not compare only the time shown between station names. For arrival day, check:

the airport terminal where your flight lands;
the number of transfers with luggage;
the walk inside the interchange;
the exit-to-hotel route at street level;
whether the route still works at your realistic arrival time.

If a Dongdaemun hotel has a much more convenient airport-bus stop or requires only a short final taxi ride, it can still beat a Hongdae property with a long walk from Hongik University Station. Start with the station, then include the final walk to the hotel door.

When Dongdaemun fits your itinerary

Dongdaemun makes more sense when the eastern side of central Seoul keeps returning to the plan. DDP, the market and shopping district, Cheonggyecheon, and nearby central areas can fit naturally into that base. When Hongdae fits your itinerary

Hongdae works differently. Its strength is the combination of Airport Railroad access, Line 2, and an evening district that many travelers choose as a destination in its own right. Visit Seoul presents Hongdae through music, art, shopping, and nightlife. If two or three evenings already point toward Hongdae, Yeonnam, or nearby western Seoul, staying there avoids a repeated late-evening trip back to your hotel.

Use your real itinerary instead of a generic list of famous places. Mark every fixed reservation, early start, and likely late evening. Then count which side of the city appears most often.

Choose Dongdaemun first when several days begin or end around DDP, markets, or the eastern side of central Seoul.
Choose Hongdae first when the airport arrival and several western-Seoul evenings support the same location.
If your plans are spread evenly, compare the exact hotel station, room, and price rather than forcing a neighborhood winner.

Shopping and evenings are different in each area

The question “Is Dongdaemun or Hongdae better for shopping?” hides two different kinds of shopping trip.

Dongdaemun is the stronger fit when the shopping district itself is a major activity. Visit Seoul describes Dongdaemun Market as a large commercial area with traditional markets and shopping centers, while DDP adds exhibitions, design events, and a major visual landmark. The practical question is not simply whether shopping exists. It is which part of the district you want and whether its operating hours match your trip.

Hongdae combines shops with cafés, street culture, music, and nightlife. That makes it easier to treat shopping, dinner, and the final hours of the day as one neighborhood plan. It can be the better base even for someone who will shop elsewhere during the day, provided the evening environment is what they want near the hotel.

Neither area promises a quiet room. A lively neighborhood can contain a calm side street, and a hotel in a commercial district can still face traffic or late activity. Check recent room reviews for noise, but also inspect the hotel’s street and entrance on a map. Do not transfer one review about a busy block to the entire neighborhood.

A cheaper hotel can outweigh the less convenient area

A lower room price matters when the saving is large enough to compensate for the route difference. It matters less when the hotel creates the same inconvenient journey every day.

The cheaper hotel is the better choice when the room saving is meaningful to you and the added journeys are acceptable. It is not the better choice merely because the nightly number is lower. Compare the final price for the same dates and room conditions, then decide how much extra walking or transferring you are willing to repeat.

Compare the hotel entrance before you book

Search from your airport terminal to the hotel at a realistic arrival time.
Check which station line and platform you will use, not only the nearest exit number.

Check one late-evening return.
Compare the final room price and cancellation terms for the same dates.

For Dongdaemun, confirm whether the useful station is Dongdaemun Station or Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station. For Hongdae, confirm that the walk works for the Airport Railroad or Line 2 platform you need. Final choice

Choose Hongdae when direct Airport Railroad access and repeated evenings in western Seoul shape the trip. Choose Dongdaemun when DDP, fashion shopping, traditional markets, and the eastern side of central Seoul appear repeatedly, provided the hotel is close to the station that serves those routes.

If the itinerary does not produce a clear winner, let the actual hotel decide. A better room, a shorter exit-to-door walk, or a substantial price difference can outweigh the neighborhood label.
